Authorities in Utah have launched a massive manhunt for the sniper behind the Charlie Kirk assassination at Utah Valley University. The conservative activist and close ally of former President Donald Trump was killed Wednesday in what the FBI described as a targeted political attack.
The 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA was shot once from a rooftop while addressing thousands of students. Panic spread as the crowd fled the campus in terror.
“This was a targeted event,” said Robert Bohls, FBI Special Agent in Charge in Salt Lake City. “The suspect blended in with the college population, appears to be of college age, and fled immediately.”

Investigators believe the gunman used a high-powered bolt-action rifle, later recovered in nearby woods. Surveillance footage shows the shooter leaping off a rooftop, running through stairwells, and escaping into a neighborhood.
Despite securing the campus, police have not yet identified the suspect. Authorities urged the public to share photos or videos that may assist in the investigation.

From the Oval Office, Trump called Kirk “a martyr for truth and freedom.” He blamed “radical left” rhetoric for creating a hostile climate that fueled the attack.
House Speaker Mike Johnson also addressed the tragedy. While noting that full congressional security would cost billions, he urged Americans to restore civility.
“Someone on the other side of an issue is not your enemy,” Johnson said. “They’re your fellow American.”
National Reckoning Over Political Violence
The Charlie Kirk assassination has deepened concerns about rising political violence in the U.S. In recent years, extremists from both ends of the spectrum have carried out deadly attacks, raising questions about public safety and political discourse.
Vice President JD Vance and his wife will travel to Salt Lake City to meet Kirk’s family, highlighting the national significance of the killing.
