In a significant political development, Kathy Hochul endorses Zohran Mamdani for mayor of New York City, giving the 33-year-old Democratic nominee one of his most influential boosts yet. Hochul, New York’s governor, praised Mamdani’s commitment to affordability, safety, and party unity in an op-ed published Sunday in The New York Times.
Hochul Highlights Affordability and Safety
Governor Hochul acknowledged that she and Mamdani differ on certain issues, but she emphasized that they agree on the urgent need to make New York City more affordable.
“In our conversations, I heard a leader who shares my commitment to a New York where children can grow up safe in their neighborhoods and where opportunity is within reach for every family,” Hochul wrote. “I heard a leader who is focused on making New York City affordable — a goal I enthusiastically support.”
She added that her endorsement also reflected Mamdani’s pledge to ensure the New York Police Department (NYPD) receives the resources and leadership necessary to keep city streets and subways safe.

Mamdani Welcomes the Endorsement
Responding to Hochul’s backing, Mamdani expressed gratitude and underscored the growing strength of his campaign.
“Governor Hochul has made affordability the centerpiece of her work. I look forward to fighting alongside her to continue her track record of putting money back in New Yorkers’ pockets and building a safer and stronger New York City where no one is forced to leave just so they can afford to raise a family,” Mamdani said.
He also thanked Hochul for her efforts to unify the Democratic Party and for her past initiatives such as expanding childcare access and providing free school lunches. “I’m grateful to the Governor for her support in unifying our party — as well as the work she’s done standing up to President Trump,” Mamdani added.
A Divisive Nominee Gains Establishment Support
The endorsement marks a turning point for Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist who has faced skepticism from moderate Democrats. His success in the primary exposed divisions within the party as it struggles to repair its brand during President Donald Trump’s tenure.
Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary, a stunning upset that reshaped the race. Cuomo has since relaunched his campaign as an independent, while incumbent Mayor Eric Adams also entered the race as an independent after skipping the Democratic primary. Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa secured his party’s nomination unopposed.
Despite winning the primary, Mamdani had not received endorsements from some of New York’s most prominent Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Hochul’s decision signals growing momentum for Mamdani within the Democratic establishment.
Critics Push Back
Not all reactions to Hochul’s move were positive. U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, chairwoman of the House Republican Leadership, blasted the governor for aligning with Mamdani.
“At the exact moment when New Yorkers are looking for strong leadership from their Governor with a majority opposing Zohran Mamdani, Kathy Hochul embraces this raging Communist who will destroy New York making it less affordable and more dangerous — once again putting criminals and communists first, and New Yorkers LAST,” Stefanik said in a statement.
Opponents have also highlighted Mamdani’s past statements and liberal platform as reasons to question his ability to lead the nation’s largest city. With the general election set for November, the campaign is likely to intensify in the coming weeks.
A Shift for Hochul
For Hochul, the endorsement carries personal significance. She once served as lieutenant governor to Cuomo, the same political figure Mamdani defeated in the primary. After Cuomo resigned in 2021 amid sexual harassment allegations, Hochul rose to the governorship. Now, she is throwing her weight behind Cuomo’s rival.
Her decision also reflects a broader Democratic strategy to consolidate support behind the party’s nominee ahead of what could be a tight and contentious general election.
Looking Ahead to November
With polls showing Mamdani leading the race, Hochul’s endorsement may solidify his standing with undecided voters. Still, with Adams and Cuomo both running as independents and Republicans rallying behind Sliwa, the outcome remains uncertain.
As Kathy Hochul endorses Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee gains legitimacy from the state’s highest officeholder, positioning him more strongly in the fight for City Hall. The endorsement highlights affordability, safety, and party unity as central themes of Mamdani’s campaign, while also deepening the political contrasts that will define November’s election.
